Bone Cancer Treatment

Bone Cancer Treatment

Bone cancers are rare forms of cancer that can affect any bone in the body. Two types of bone cancer are multiple myeloma and bone sarcomas. Bone cancers can also happen when tumors that start in other organs, such as breasts, lung, and prostate, metastasize (spread) to the bone. Multiple myeloma is the most common type of bone cancer. Basic information about Bone cancer symptoms and treatment.

Blood tests, X-rays, CT scans, MIRs and ultrasound can all be used in the diagnosis of bone cancer and cancer of the bone marrow. Ultimately however, only a bone biopsy can provide a definitive diagnosis. By examining a sample of tissue, a Pathologist can determine whether cancer is present and how fast it’s growing, crucial information in determining the best course of treatment.

Types of Bone Cancer: Osteosarcoma is the most common bone cancer. It rarely occurs in adults older than 25 years old. Osteosarcoma is usually found in the bones of the arms, legs and pelvis, and in bones that grow rapidly, such as the shoulders and knees.

Ewing’s sarcoma is commonly found in children ages 4 to 15, and is rare in adults older than 30. It is an aggressive cancer typically found in the center of the long bones of the arms and legs.

Chondrosarcoma is found in cartilage cells and accounts for about 25 percent of bone tumors, making it the second most common type. Unlike most other bone cancers, it is most common in people older than 40. It is typically found in the large bones of the hips and pelvis.

Bone Cancer Symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Swelling or tenderness of the joints
  • Fractures
  • Fatigue, fever, weight loss, anemia
  • Bone dysplasia with medullary fibrosarcoma
  • Eosinophilic granuloma
  • Multiple Myeloma

The symptoms of bone cancer vary from one person to another according to the location and size of the bone cancer. Pain is one of the most common bone cancer symptoms. Generally, there is a gradual increase in the severity of the symptoms with time. At first, the pain may only be felt with activity or at night.

These are common types of Bone Cancer Treatment:

Surgery

How bone cancer is treated depends on the type of tumor, how aggressive it is, the location of the tumor and whether or not the cancer has spread to other areas of the body. Options include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, or a combination of the three.
Risks include infection, damage to surrounding muscles, nerves and blood vessels, and recurrence of the cancer. Patients are often prescribed a course of physical therapy after surgery to help them regain full use and strength in the limb where the tumor was removed.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is administered by an oncologist, and comprises a series of powerful intravenous drug treatments aimed at stopping and reversing the growth of cancer cells. Chemotherapy is often used before surgery to shrink the tumor, making surgery less invasive. After surgery, it is used as a safeguard to kill any remaining cancer cells. The drugs kill cancer cells, but also affect hair, digestive tract cells and blood-forming cells. Loss of hair, nausea, loss of appetite, anemia and low energy are common side effects of chemotherapy. These side effects usually go away quickly after chemotherapy stops. Chemotherapy patients are sometimes referred to nutritionists to help with the anemia and loss of appetite.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is administered by a radiation oncologist, and comprises a series of high-energy X-rays aimed at the site of the tumor. This treatment is given in small doses over several days, sometimes months. The most common side effects are loss of appetite, fatigue and damage to the skin and other soft tissue at the site of the treatment. Patients who undergo surgery near the site of radiation therapy sometimes are slow to heal because of damage to the blood vessels at the site. Most side effects go away quickly after radiation therapy is over, but problems with slow healing may persist.

  • 1,900 Americans die every day because of the suppression of natural therapies for curing cancer.. THE REAL STORY can be found at ravediet dot com. Google “Healing Cancer from the inside out” See also: “Dying To Have Known”, “The Beautiful Truth” and “The Gerson Miracle”… What your doctor doesn’t (want to) know could kill you.

  • Carol D:

The FDA and drug manufacturer both recommend treatments every 3-4 weeks for bone cancer, so it looks like you are receiving the recommended dosage.

Patients monitored over several consecutive treatments showed increasd blood plasma concentrations that seem to plateau at roughly 15% higher than the plasma concentration if the drug did not build up. Increased concentrations of this magnitude are considered small.

  • Surgery is always the first treatment for bone cancer patients. What would happen next would depend on the type of bone cancer, the stage of disease and where the tumor was located. Radiation might be used after surgery but not always. Chemo would only be used if the tumor had been shown to be responsive to a particular chemotherapy drug. Some bone tumors do not respond to many types of chemotherapy.

Ozone would never be used by a legitimate Dr since ozone is not approved by the FDA for treating cancer and any use of ozone would open the Dr and hospital up to criminal prosecution.

  • mainly uterus cancers for female and prostate cancer for male, and the body becomes susceptible for infection, and as we know recurrent infection means recurrent regeneration for cells, this make the change in cell structure and function so easy, and when the function or structure of cells or both are changed the result will be cancer

  • I think prevention is the first line to defeat cancer, when you try to prevent some factors that may be led to cancer, you will prevent a large problem, some factors you can modify it like “stop smoking” will aid in lung cancer prevention, avoidance of unhealthy sex like have more than one sexual partner will reduce the occurance of infection especially STD which consider the main risk factors for many cancers.

  • THERES A CURE FOR CANCER.
    THEN
LOOK AT HOW MUCH MONEY THEY MAKE OF IT.

———————— FINAL VERDICT. YOU HAVE TO BE SMART TO UNDERSTAND

  • If you are a citizen or a landed immigrant it is covered by your provincial coverage which is paid for though your taxes.

The only thing you may need to find funding for is travel. But if you contact the Canadian cancer society they can often help you find a place to stay if you need to travel for treatments.

Then if the limb is removed some provinces do not provide coverage for prosthetic limbs, daily living aids ( shower chairs, wheel chairs, crutches ect) if you have insurance it may cover the costs not covered by the provinces. Some provinces do cover all of these needs others do not.

the treatment and operations are covered.

  • This is absolutely awful! It’s not helpful at all. If anything it’s scare mongering! What exactly are you trying to achieve with this??

  • If they are talking about her NOT having chemo her chances are very good indeed .Best of luck.

  • My two year old Alaskan Malamute has bilateral hip dysplasia and carpal arthritis in both front legs.

He gets monthly chiropractic and acupuncture treatments along with custom chinese herbs and Adequan injections, along with daily Dasuquin.

I work at a rather large vet clinic and the doctor that treats my dog, Kodiak, also treats horses and cats in addition to dogs. Our clinic is located in eastern North Dakota and we have clients that come from all areas on Minnesota including Minneapolis, various parts of Canada, Montana and South Dakota for treatments.

This spring, we are also going to do gold wire implants in Kodiak's hips to help prevent worsening of the dysplasia.

I'd recommend looking for a veterinarian in your area that is certified in animal acupuncture and chiropractic and or traditional chinese medicine.

I was a MAJOR skeptic of this until I ran out of options for Kodiak. So I gave it a try, and it's given our boy a new lease on life!!!

  • My heart goes out to you and your sister. Life isn't fair, is it? She shouldn't have to deal with this on top of everything else.

If she has a brain tumor and it has spread to the bones, the prognosis usually isn't good. The only one who can really tell you is her oncologist. I'm assuming she's been seeing an oncologist, a cancer specialist. Hopefully, this doctor will be part of a cancer center with a number of doctors and lots of services.

The oncologist will recommend a course of treatment, often including radiation and chemotherapy. The treatment is usually done over a period of a few months as an out patient. Your sis will have to go there and have chemo, probably. There are a number of side effects from chemo, but most can be dealt with. The cancer centers have it down and know what to expect. They should be able to keep her comfortable.

The main thing is for someone to ask lots of questions. Keep asking until you understand what's going on. Call back for clarification if needed. Someone should go to her appointments with her. This is a traumatic experience and often the patient is too upset to take it all in. Also, it'll be a lot of information and it may be hard for just one person to remember it all. Your sister and her loved ones have a right to understand what's going on and what the plans are.

She's going to need a lot of support. Enlist the help of anyone who is willing. As time goes on, you'll know what kind of help you need. It may be help with shopping, laundry, picking up medicine, rides to the doctor. When people ask what they can do, be ready with a real answer. Tell them that they could give her a ride to treatment, or some other chore. It'll make the load easier and it gives the person offering something concrete to do so that they can feel like they helped. This is good for all involved.

It's impossible to know what caused the cancer, in most cases. No one should blame themselves.

The American Cancer Society is a great help to patients and their families. The provide all kinds of help like getting people wigs or a ride to treatment, as well as educating people and providing support. Their web site is at http://www.cancer.org

I hope this helped. I'm a retired nurse who worked in this area but also the relative of two cancer patients.

  • I agree that this sounds more like breast cancer spread to bone. Sometimes biopsy is worthwhile to confirm but in some circumstances starting treatment is OK without one. For treatment, chemotherapy will treat the whole body, it may not relieve her pain. If it doesn't, then radiation treatment can be helpful at relieving her pain. I hope your friend feels better soon!

  • Medical treatment is highly standardized across the world. The exact same procedures, medications, and treatment offerings are available in Tokyo, Shanghai, London, New York, and every other major city. There is no difference.
