Adopting a Healthy Diet – What Does That Entail?

Adopting a Healthy Diet – What Does That Entail?

Everyday, people are faced with a wide selection of food options. Your local grocery store has hundreds of food offerings. You will find several aisles with numerous food options. A local restaurant can offer several pages of dishes that you can choose from. Indeed, you are bombarded with numerous food choices on a daily basis. It’s not surprising why some people cannot plan a healthy diet regimen very well.

On top of this, people have to deal with an onslaught of information from various media. You would find advertising promoting McDonalds or Pizza Hut. Every ad is designed to convince you to give in to your sweet cravings. On the other hand, you get nutritionists and health gurus warning you of the dangers of junk foods. You would also find health experts promoting one form of healthy diet after another.

With many options and contrasting information, it is not surprising that people are having difficulty figuring out what a healthy diet exactly is. People are constantly having problems controlling their weight and their eating habits. If you are having the same problem, you are probably giving in to indulgences and you are likely overeating. However, the importance of a healthy diet cannot be overstressed. To help you achieve a healthy diet, you need to arm yourself with vital nutrition information that will help you determine proper food choices.

Moderation is the Key to a Healthy Diet

If you want to maintain a healthy diet, you really don’t have to forego chocolates, ice creams or cakes as long as you eat them in small amounts. You need to practice moderation when it comes to eating. Overeating is the number one cause of obesity and moderation is actually the essential key to maintaining good health. But how do you this?

Basically, eating food in moderation comes with attention. You need to pay attention to what you are eating and to the amount of food that you have eaten. One of the many reasons why people tend to overeat is that they fail to notice whenever their bodies are telling them that they have had enough food. It is important that you learn to eat slowly. You need to be aware of how much you have consumed, so that you would know when you have had enough food.

To eat in moderation, you should avoid second helpings. You should opt for regular sized meals instead of the largest items in a restaurant. You should be particularly conscious of the amount of food you have consumed when you are eating “junk foods”. Again, you don’t have to avoid it altogether, but you need to be a conscious eater. If you are going to eat cookies, don’t eat directly from the box. Often people will only discover that they have eaten a lot once they have realized that they have finished the whole box.

Be Conscious of When You Eat

Aside from controlling your food intake, you should also be conscious of when you eat. This is part of ensuring a healthy diet. Generally, people are better off eating 5 to 6 small meals per day. This is because the body is unable to process or handle large meals. It tends to convert the food into fats. On the other hand, if you eat small meals a day, your body will be better equipped to handle small amount of foods.

It is also very important that you avoid late night snacking. Your stomach should be empty 3 or 4 hours before you go to sleep. It can be tempting to have a large sandwich at midnight but this habit will take a toll on your weight and health. Your body will merely store the food as fat while you sleep. There’s nothing like waking up with an empty stomach and enjoying a healthy breakfast with your family. Speaking of breakfast, this is one meal that you should never skip. Skipping out on a heavy breakfast will make you crave food the entire day.

Do Not Starve Yourself

Many people think that by starving themselves, they would lose weight. Unfortunately, this rarely happens because once the hunger kicks in and they give in to it, they would likely end up eating huge fatty meals. They also tend to become more obsessed with food and they end up consuming large amounts of food.

Basically, having a healthy diet means eating foods rich in nutrients, eating foods in moderation and being conscious of your eating habits. By adopting a healthy diet, you will live a much better life.

  • Here's a few diet habits that you could do.
I am inspired by the Japanese low rate of obesity and life longetivity.

Walk more often! Many Japanese don't rely on their car or public cars to do their activities. They do a lot of walking and climbing stairs on their daily activities. Japanese also ride bicycle often, those are good ways to increase the calories output.

Don't eat like a giant! You can start reducing your consumption, it may take sometime before your stomach is used to it.

Don't eat until you are full! Eat until you are 80% full.

Consume more fish based foods rather than meat based products.

Eat slowly! Compare the eating speed of a person that uses chopstick versus a person that uses spoon and fork. The chopstick is carefully designed so that you will eat slowly to let your digestion process works effectively. So eat at slower pace no matter how hungry you are.

Make that a habit and combine your habits with healthy foods

  • @AngelHoobes rofl i know. I never drink that much. No wonder I always feel tired.

  • 1. eat plenty of whole grains- at least 1 serving at every meal. whole grains could be bread, rice, crackers, cereal, or pasta. a serving is only 1/2 cup!

    2. eat a serving of protein at every meal- egg, 3 oz fish, chicken, or fish, 1/2 cup beans,

    3. cook with canola or olive oil

    4. 2 med sized fruit daily

    5. 2.5 cups of veggies daily- or half your plate at every meal!

    6. eliminate processed flour food like regular white bread and pasta

    7. eliminate or rarely eat salty snack foods, soda, and candy

    8. dairy- 1 serving day

    9. nuts- if you are not allergic, 1-2 handfuls a day

    10. water- drink when thirsty

  • The MOST important thing is to eat naturally..without medicines, chemicals, "starving" your self etc.

first, it would be best for you to eat as healthy as possible..this will also help you considerably to lose weight gradually and naturally..

eat fresh fruits, vegetables, drink plenty of WATER..avoid all cokes, caffeines, smoking, alchohol etc. as these also add weight as well as they contain chemicals which disturb your natural bio rythmns as well as brain chemistry. try not to eat too much meat, and the meat you should eat should be "lean meat" such as steamed chicken and rice, or steamed fish with rice..and vegetables,, this should be your staple diet rice and vegetables with fruits..AVOID "JUNK FOOD" and "Fast Food" as this type of food is very unhealthy, lacking in vitamins really and has plenty of fattening molecules which make one gain weight and is not good .

if you snack,, try fruits with yogurt or fruit yogurt and nuts.. nuts are very healthy for your body .and contain proteins.

go for walks every evening or morning or whenever you get time each day for 1 hour or 2 hours..make this somewhere you enjoy walking even if you have to drive a bit to there..and make this a daily routine..you will enjoy it once you get into it ..and it makes you feel great after..just walking for 1 hour or 2 hours.

if you do this..every day for one month ..you should lose around 10 pounds (.714 stone) per month until you get to your natural healthy weight.. look up on the internet for an idea of what your weight for your height should be ..and when you get to this weight,,your body will look very nice and you will feel very good.

10 pounds (.714 stone ) each month in 3 months you should lose 30 pounds (2 stones, 2 pounds)..for sure…but no junk food and dont drink alcohol or smoke, dont eat junk..just healthy food with vitamins and walking 1 hour or 2 hours every day..and drink plenty of water..this is guaranteed way to lose weight naturally and for good, if you stick to this, which you should,,as it makes you feel so much more positive due to the vitamins and lack of chemicals making you feel depressed…

btw, forgot to mention,,just in case you dont know how to really make healthy meals..buy a "food steamer" at your local deparment store..they are very cheap and work very well..as well as buy a "rice cooker" which is also very cheap..eating rice is a great way to get your necessary carbs "healthy carbs" to lose weight and has lots of natural energy inside. you can buy asian rice at most large supermarkets or if you have a local oriental market..they sale quality asian rice.. thai or indian rice is good "jasmine rice".. buy corn or canola oil to sprinkle on vegetables or rice before steaming to add to taste as well as you can buy several nice spices like "cumin" or "Curry powders", etc.just sprinkle on the vegetables before steaming to give nice taste.

drink "Green Tea" as this is very healthy and helps burn extra fat faster…you can buy quality green tea at most oriental shops or large supermarkets as well

  • yes i agree to it, fruits are very helpful and even the water..

  • She’s nervous lol

  • A food plan that is easy to follow without any expensive things to buy.

A food plan that lets me feel satified with every meal and not still starving.

A food plan that allows me the freedom to choose what I want to eat – within reason.

A food plan that doesn't cut out one or more food groups.

A food plan that gives good results on the scales and in inches.

A food plan that doesn't make me tired and leaves me with no energy and headaches.

A food plan that lets you have a little treat every now and again without you putting 2Lbs back on.

A food plan that feels like a food plan and not a DIET.

I think that is all I could really ask for.

    Hope this helps.

    Bon

  • Life is a joggling act and so when it comes to eating healthy we can all do with a little help. i have found that meal replacement by way of protein shakes twice a day and one regular meal has greatly enhance my physical well being. And yes these meal replacement can be had every day because they have all the minerals and vitamins that we need for the day.I get mine from this shop. http://www.shopherbalife.com/bestherbalifeonline

  • you probably can't lose 50lbs in 6months unless you eat less than 1500cals a day or if you exercise for hrs. a day..
eating 1500cals is safe to do but you will have to get use to being hungry each and every day of the 6months. i did it for 5months and lost 33lbs.
if you think you can lose 50lbs in 6months without feeling hungry each day then i don't think that is realistic.

  • There is no magic pill or program for weight loss, regardless of what others tell you.

When I first started weight watchers, it took me about 6 – 8 weeks before I saw steady benefits i.e. steady 2 – 3 lb loss per week.

You need to follow a sensible diet and start exercising. Start eating fruits and vegetables and lean protein.

There is a great show on the Lifestyle channel, Cook Yourself Thin. They show you how to change your fave recipes to low fat, low calorie. It’s a really neat show.

Their idea is that you take your goal weight and multiply by 10. This number is your maximum daily calories.

You need to eat what's called filling foods to not get hungry all the time. Things like apples and bananas are filling. Almost all types of beans, garbanzo, green, kidney, re-fried fat-free, beets, cauliflower are some of the many filling veggies.

Avoid over-use of salt, you will retain water.

Drink water, and if you don’t like it plain try a little squeezed lemon or lime in it. Drink at least 8 ozs before each meal.

You may also want to try switching from 3 meals a day and eating 4 or 5 lighter meals.

Exercise, … if you don’t already start walking or anything. Just don’t overdo it at first or you will find reasons to stop.

Losing weight requires a lifestyle change.

    Good luck!

  • 2000 calories is too much or too little depending on the person.
A rough estimate is your current weight times 10 first
.I am 132# 1320 calories to maintain my weight for lying in bed all day. Add 10% (132) for digesting and eating food
S0 1452, next times your activity level
    0.2 for sedentary
0.3 for moderately active (1452 x 0.3=435.6+1452=1887.6 calories per day to maintain my weight)
So 2000 would be too much.
You need to plug the numbers to find your needs. To lose weight remove no more than 500 calories per day (unless your caloric needs exceed 3000 calories per day) from what is needed to MAINTAIN your weight. With that you should lose roughly 1 lb per week (3500 calories = 1 # of fat)
    0.5 for highly active.
Your intake should not be any lower than 1200 calories per day of highly varied foods, that contains
    fruit, rainbow of fruits
    veggies brighter=more vitamins
lean meats (or meat alternatives) skinless chicken pork loin, round ste, tofu, soybeans, legumes
a healthy balance of fats, canola oil, flaxseed oil, non-hydrogenated margarine or a small amount of butter,
    whole grains
lowfat dairy lowfat yogurt and cottage cheese (also a meat alternative) lowfat cheese
and low in sugar. limit sodas, ban the sugar bowl. There is no dietary recommendation for sugar-
whole grains-wheat bread (3 grams of fiber per svg) brown rice, whole wheat tortillas

There is actually a more complex formula that uses your height, gender and age. But this formula is adequate enough
